![]() ![]() Show Shae however does love Tyrion, their relationship (for the most part) is more healthy and straight forward, until obviously he's forced to marry Sansa. Book Shae truly finds Tyrion repulsive and gross, so when she betrays him and sleeps with Tywin you believe it. She parrots what he wants to hear, it's easier to notice in the books because she'll repeat ridiculous phrases of adoration to Tyrion over and over and otherwise just complains. Book Shae is younger and more single minded, she does not habror any love towards Tyrion, and cares only for the material things she can get from her relationship with him. I think the 'problem' with Shae truly boils down to how different she is in the books vs the show. The result was a less than compelling character with inconsistent motives, who, again, takes up screen time that could have been used on better characters. In the show, they decided to make their romance real, make Shae truly love Tyrion, and all the rest. In the books it's pretty clear that Shae is a manipulative whore who is playing Tyrion, and Tyrion is lonely and gullible enough to fall for it - then he murders her when he finally gets that he's been played. I think a lot of this is the consequence of them deciding to make Tyrion less of a dark character. I liked her character in Season 1 but then in Season 2 and 3 all of her extra scenes were just not great. ![]() The few times she has the opportunity to share anything personal she refuses and remains mysterious and private. Despite giving her a bigger part we basically never learn anything about her, making it hard to "get" her, which compounds with the bad acting and inconsistent characterization to make an extremely unrelatable character that is hard to understand. It all makes it very hard to understand what she's really about. She's a badass whore with a lot of life experience, but she's also naïve and doesn't understand how to be discrete in KL, she's confident and sexy but also jealous and insecure of Sansa, while also being motherly and protective of Sansa, she loves Tyrion but also betrays him and fucks his dad, etc. Her characterization is all over the place. They wrote a bigger part for her that isn't in the books and that she didn't really deserve (see above point). The actress is one of the worst in the show, her delivery and performance is generally not believable and her accent feels out of place (where is she supposed to be from?). ![]() Shae, all things considered, was much more necessary than Olly. The entire plot could have done without him. They straight up wrote in Olly to kill a beloved character on screen, kill a main character, and then be hanged as a young kid. Like they needed more reason for the thing that has divided Southerners from the Wildlings.we already knew the Wildlings were very hated.Īnd then they have "the best archer in my hamlet" be the one to kill Ygritte, when it's much more vague in the books as Jon comes across her dying body. Yes, the Thenns raided his village and killed and ate his parents, and then released him to go tell the Night's Watch they were coming, but Olly essentially served as the primary reason for all of the divisiveness between Jon and him letting the Wildlings through the wall. See, the issue I have with Olly is that he was completely written into the show as a plot device to serve as shock value for three reasons: Ygritte's death, Jon's betrayal, and Jon hanging a kid for treason.
